CREATIVE OUTLET IDEAS & TIPS

Get More Info On the Wednesday Creative Outlet workshop HERE

  1. Writing/Journaling: Whip up your imagination by writing a fictional story or poem. Write the memoir or that comedy special you’ve been meaning to get to. Release thoughts, feelings and emotions stored inside by journaling them out onto the page.

  2. Reading: Pick up a book or magazine on a topic that interests you (try and stay off screens and do your best to avoid reading news and current events). Get awesome suggestions from your local bookstore or library attendant. Discover local indie booksellers here: https://www.indiebound.org/

  3. Draw/Paint/Color: Break out the paint, markers, nail polish, colored pens and more! Free draw or pose your pooch or partner for a portrait. Maybe make a comic or paint the perfect piece of art or furniture to tie the room together. Check out Andrea Kohelers The Coloring Project for awesome graphics to color here: https://www.thecoloringproject.com/. 4. Fiber Arts (knitting, weaving, quilting etc.): Not only is tapping into your sense of touch a lovely part of working with the ole yarn and thread but you're often left with a piece of functional art that expresses your personal flair. Check out Mandy Greer’s offerings of . classes and kits that allow you to “get your weave on” at home! http://mandygreer.org

  5. Dancing/Movement: Letting your body move freely to rhythm is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. Resist the urge to turn your creative outlet into a calorie burner and tap into what your limbs and systems really need. Check out this awesome playlist from one of my favorite DJ’s Griffin Girrl (Emily Griffin) here: https://soundcloud.com/griffingrrl/rebel-disco-alliance-cascadia-2017

  6. Cooking: Pick your recipe and gather your ingredients ahead of time. Try cooking a new recipe or revamping an old standby. Make sure to spend time mindfully plating your creation and smelling and tasting with intention as you go! Check out these awesome cooking class by Chef Sabrina Tinsley https://www.laspiga.com/event/pasta-making-classes-on-demand/

  7. Building/Sculpting: Break out the blocks, Leggos and playdough (maybe make your own!). Building worlds and lands can instantly tap us into childlike wonder. Think outside the box by using different mediums like jewelry making, upholstery and scrapbooking. Check out the DIY Kits from The Works in Seattle, WA for creative inspiration: https://theworksseattle.com/collections/class-kits

  8. Music: Music is a soul language, it has the power to express when words just aren’t enough. Dust off the guitar, djembe or your vocal chords and make some glorious tunes. Write a song, learn a song, perform the perfect air guitar to your favorite jams or create a new set of instruments using things around the house.

Try To Avoid:

  1. Making Lists (If you must, make a list of places you’d like to travel, what you’d do with a billion dollars, your dream jobs or anything else that lights up your imagination.)

  2. Meal Prepping (If you must, try and use colorful fruit and veggies and cut items into whimsical shapes and forms)

  3. Cleaning and chores (If you must, rearrange your furniture and house items as you go and turn your cleaning moves into dance moves. Marie Kondo your drawers and shelves for some domestic joy sparking.)

  4. Doing homework (If you must, take creative breaks and take notes using vivid colors and illustrations)

  5. Editing yourself (If you must, realize you don’t have to! This space is for you feel free to express, create and release. Let yourself be surprised and inspired)

Tips:

-Dare to Go There, let yourself go free and resist the urge to judge your creations

-Stay Curious, ride the waves of boredom, interest, expectation and creative spark

-Stay Focused on one thing and avoid multitasking
