She started the concert singing “I Love You” and then proved it for nearly three heart pounding, scream & tear inducing hours of sonic and visual EXCELLENCE, the likes of which have never been seen until Beyonce's Renaissance World Tour!!!!
This year’s Refuge Outdoor Festival was incredible and I’m truly looking forward to next year’s gathering! It was the diversity medicine I needed and I met people I’ll definitely be spending time with between retreats.
I grew up in a Black family surrounded by mostly White people and Christian culture (I know, how did I end up like this?!). It made it harder to access some of the deepest parts of who I am and it’s a privilege to have so much more space to do so now.
Ceremony is home and I got to go home again this past Sunday at Reconexión. This particular offering by beloved and powerful woman of spirit Maria Muñoz @marialightowl was the first of, I suspect, many to come but it felt familiar. It was warm, everyone belonged, there was no pressure yet we were so held, there was respect and curiosity, it felt fertile.
No one can be shackled and captive that still has control of their mind, my Uncle knows this. On this Juneteenth I wish hope, bright future, freedom energy and joy to all African American people. All we are called to do in this chapter is LIVE in joy, with pride and with hope and faith that things are and will continue to get better for us!!
I’m the Black half of an interracial couple and I have a LOT of feels about it.
Maybe other Black folks in interracial partnerships can understand this but somewhere, deep inside, I experience feelings of guilt because my partner is White….
I started Dancewalking in 2009 as a self-dare. I dared myself to show no restraint, to let my body move when my favorite songs came on during my park walks in San Diego. Nobody told me to dare myself so why would I inflict what seemed like a cruel sorority hazing game on myself?
But it isn’t culture. It’s a traumatic retention that has lost its context over time…
Happy Birthday to Dear Teacher & Visionary Robert Nesta Marley. Listening to the music and lessons of Bob Marley & The Wailers today.
The knowledge of how to heal our own bodies will always live right within us all.
The self-healing path can provide an exciting way to connect with the body and unravel some of its mysteries. On this path, you might develop your power to tune out unsupportive or irrelevant voices in the mind so you can tune into what you truly need, at the moment, to grow.
There are numerous woman rulers in African History, matrilineal supremacy is as old as the human story. I’ve recently discovered a lineage of mighty woman rulers of the Kush Kingdom (which evolved into present day Sudan) and their stories are bold and energizing.
Thank you for being the face of the darkness that snapped millions awake
Thank you for calling in a mass Soul Searching
The Yoruba people are from western Africa, mainly Nigeria, Benin, Togo and parts of Ghana. With the onset of the chattel slave trade Yoruba culture expanded across the world to Trinidad, Cuba, Saint Lucia, Benin, Togo, Brazil, Guyana, Haiti, and Jamaica, to name a few.
Everybody keeps telling you "DO. THE. WORK." but what does that mean? For me, it's shorthand for "Know Thyself." If you find you're dragging your feet to the self-awareness table it's probably because deep down you're afraid you might find something dark and ugly you aren't ready to identify with. Welcome to the club:)
GO. WITH. THE. FLOW. Easier said than done, I know! But there's only one thing harder: Resisting the flow. Often things get the most tough, unwound and chaotic right before a transformation. A knee jerk reaction to dig your heels in and cling to all your baggage is understandable but it's not effective. No real growth process operates like a light switch (although the initial "ah-ha!" realization moment makes it feel that way).
Give yourself a break from social media for even just an hour and sit with the music of beloved revolutionary Black elder, activist and professor, Bob Marley. Not only will you be served knowledge, you'll elevate your spirit, shed bad feelings and be left feeling refreshed.
European Americans are the descendants of the dreamers, the rejects, the outlawed, the people with nothing to lose, the seekers, the travelers. You come from people who didn’t fit into the establishment and dreamed there could be a better way of living. It is in your bones somewhere, you completely understand the Human need to dream, create and grow. At some level, European Americans arrived in these far off lands to remember the deep wisdom of ceremony, Mother Earth and our interconnectedness that had long been abandoned and denied.
Let's hope the seeds of warmth, wisdom and resilience our ancestors planted can change the hearts and minds of those in resistance to this tidal wave of change.
From May 31-June 1 White terrorists rioted, looted, aircraft bombed and burned down a prosperous Black community in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 10,000 Black people were left homeless, 35 blocks we're laid to waste and over 300 lives were lost. 99 years later our Ancestors are rolling through the land like deep thunder, "Let the olds ways burn, the war has been won and love conquers all" * * *
Black people can be all the things that White people can be and STILL retain our Blackness. Trust me, when you step into one of our family reunions the personality types, likes and dislikes are as diverse as every single other family in the world. We ALL got nerds and know it alls, we got hoes, we got shy peeps, we got loud lushes, we got punks, we got health nuts and we have dancers at all levels from wall flowers to dance floor slayers.
